Rep. Abbarno named ‘2021 Legislator of the Year’ by agricultural educators
The Washington Association of Agricultural Educators has named Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, “2021 Legislator of the Year” by local agricultural educators. Abbarno was presented the award Tuesday by Molly Majors, an agricultural teacher at Adna Middle/High School.
“Representative Abbarno has been an outstanding advocate at the state Capitol for career and technical education. He understands that agriculture is the cornerstone of his district,” said Majors. “He understands the importance of the history of agriculture and the future of where it is heading, and that it still needs to remain the cornerstone of not only our state, but of our nation. And he understands that students are the future of agriculture.”
The association is made up of teachers from across the state who dedicate their professional lives to advancing agricultural education and strengthening their own leadership skills. They serve on school committees, taking part in community organizations and working toward the mutual success of agricultural education in Washington state. The group has eight regional districts. Majors says Abbarno was chosen for the award by agricultural teachers in District 3, which encompasses Grays Harbor, Pacific and Lewis counties, and parts of Thurston County.
“I am honored to receive the recognition from the Washington Association of Agricultural Educators for my support of their work in the classroom. Farming, agriculture, and a natural resource-based economy is a strong part of the history and tradition in southwest Washington. I appreciate the hard work and dedication of our teachers who expose and cultivate the love for our agricultural community in the classroom,” said Abbarno. “My family has been involved in 4-H and FFA. We know the importance these teachers have on our students' growth and development. I hope everyone supports these students and their work at county fairs throughout the state. And, if you see an ag. teacher, tell them 'thank you!'”
Abbarno is serving his first term in office, representing the 20th Legislative District.
