Rep. Peter Abbarno welcomes Orin C. Smith Elementary School students and teachers at the Capitol

On Tuesday, students and teachers from Orin C. Smith Elementary School (grades 3-5) in Chehalis met with Rep. Peter Abbarno during their tour of the state Capitol.

The 20th District lawmaker discussed the legislative session, how a bill becomes a law, and other civics-related issues with the elementary school students.

“I try to never miss an opportunity to meet with and engage students when they visit our state Capitol,” said Abbarno, R-Centralia. “Capitol tours are such a great learning opportunity for young people to get to see how their state Legislature works up-close and in-person as a supplement to the civics education they get at school. We had a great time talking about how this place works, and I hope they all return someday to participate in the House page program.”

Did you know? The legislative building is comprised of more than 173 million pounds of stone, brick, concrete, and steel, including Tenino Sandstone from the 20th District. The Capitol Dome is one of the tallest masonry domes in the world and the tallest in North America, rising 287 feet high, according to the Washington State Department of Enterprise Services (DES).
