VIDEO | Legislative Highlights: Week 2 Recap with Rep. Peter Abbarno
House Republican Caucus Chair Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, recaps week two of the 2025 legislative session. There’s no shortage of bills that could significantly impact families, communities, and the future of our state. Some threaten to take us backward, while others offer real solutions to Fix Washington.
The bad bills:
- House Bill 1217 proposes statewide government rent control or destabilization. While housing affordability is a critical issue, rent control would worsen the crisis by discouraging home construction and driving up long-term costs.
- House Bill 1296 seeks to undo critical parental rights protections passed into law just last year.
The good bills:
- House Bill 1307, championed by Reps. Michelle Caldier, R-Gig Harbor, and Stephanie McClintock, R-Vancouver, would remove the sales tax on diapers and other essential child care products, easing the financial burden on families.
- House Bill 1435 and 1436, sponsored by Rep. Hunter Abell, R-Inchelium, aims to strengthen public safety by helping communities hire more law enforcement officers.
