Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, is standing up for Washington families and businesses, warning about the financial impact of House Bill 1409. In his committee remarks during the House Environment and Energy Committee, he stresses that this extreme clean fuels policy has a regressive impact on working families and fixed-income Washingtonians. HB 1409 would further increase fuel costs–causing everything at their kitchen table to cost more.
Financial security is the number one indicator of a person’s or family’s health. This policy is absolutely going to increase the cost of fuel, and that’s going to trickle down to every single thing that families buy.

HB 1409 expands Washington’s Clean Fuels Program, aiming to further reduce carbon emissions in transportation fuels. To date, Washington has missed climate commitment targets. Supporters argue it’s a step toward a greener future, but Abbarno and others caution that further unrealistic acceleration will continue to drive up costs for fuel, food, and essential goods—hitting working families the hardest.
