Washington State House of Representatives celebrates 50 years of Special Olympics Washington

State Representative Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, and the Washington State House of Representatives honored the legacy and impact of Special Olympics Washington with the passage of House Resolution 4631. The resolution, which was sponsored by Abbarno, recognizes the organization’s 50 years of championing inclusion, empowering athletes, and transforming lives across the state.

“Special Olympics Washington has been a beacon of hope, opportunity, and inclusion for thousands of athletes and their families,” said Abbarno, House Republican Caucus Chair. “These athletes are absolutely amazing—not just in their dedication and perseverance, but in the way they inspire everyone around them. When you spend time at a Special Olympics event, you can’t help but walk away feeling uplifted and encouraged. Their joy, sportsmanship, and determination remind us of what true strength and community look like.”

Since its founding in 1975, Special Olympics Washington has grown into a movement that now serves more than 12,000 athletes of all abilities through year-round training and competitions. The organization is part of a global network that reaches over 4.2 million participants across 207 countries.

The resolution highlights the profound impact Special Olympics Washington has had on communities statewide, offering life-changing opportunities for athletes, fostering acceptance, and promoting a culture where ability is never a barrier to success.

Abbarno, who was joined at the Capitol by Special Olympics Washington athletes, their families, board members, and staff, celebrates the organization’s legacy and its continued mission to empower individuals of all abilities.

“Special Olympics is more than just sports—it’s about inclusion, empowerment, and belonging,” Abbarno added. “As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting and expanding opportunities for these incredible athletes for the next 50 years and beyond.”

The Washington State House of Representatives officially adopted House Resolution 4631 on March 25, 2025, recognizing the contributions of Special Olympics Washington and urging continued efforts to build a more inclusive future.
