VIDEO | Standing up against higher costs: Rep. Peter Abbarno supports amendment to protect working families
House Republican Caucus Chair Rep. Peter Abbarno stood in support of Amendment 1428 to Senate Bill 5801 — an effort to reduce a proposed 12-cent increase on diesel fuel. With fuel costs already among the highest in the nation, Abbarno warned that even higher diesel prices would make life even more expensive for Washington families, from the grocery store to the pharmacy.
Washington currently has the fourth-highest grocery costs in the country and some of the most expensive fuel prices, with diesel already over 60 cents more per gallon than the national average. Abbarno explained how raising transportation costs would only drive up the cost of essentials even further, hitting working families and seniors the hardest.
“This amendment would help lower fuel costs and reduce the overall cost of living for the people who need relief the most,” said Abbarno. “It’s time to stand with working families and seniors who are struggling at the kitchen table. Let’s start giving them the help they deserve.”
The amendment was unfortunately rejected, and Abbarno ultimately voted no on Senate Bill 5801 to stand against new taxes and fees that would make life more expensive in Washington.
